Le Pouce Mountain

From the top of its 811m , Le Pouce Mountain stands out from far as a thumb pointing to the sky.

The track will 'Z' its way up to reach a viewpoint giving on Pailles region with the Domaine les Pailles directly under us and the Belle Vue Light house in the distance on the West Coast. We will also see the capital with its high buildings and Port.

We will reach a small plain we call l'Esplanade where we will have a small break before summitting. From L'esplanade you will have a view on the Port Louis Mountain range and the Famous Pieter Both with its boulder head seemingly in equilibrium on the top. The small village of Caroline and Vallée des Prêtres can be seen far below, some 500m lower. Our altitude is now 746m above sea level.

We return through the same track to St. Pierre.

Our Hike starts at the base of the mountain at St. Pierre, in the middle of sugar cane fields. Our track will cut across the cane fields for a while before taking us through the green vegetation on the mountain. as we will gain in altitude, a panoramic view of  Plaines Wilhems will unveli itself, with the Corps de Garde, Piton du Milieu and Rempart mountains clearly standing out.

We usually leave our bags at l"esplanade before walking up to the summit. The track to the summit will cut through the remnants of what used to be our native forests. The last leg is a little steep but once you are on top of Le Pouce, the 360 degree view is worth the effort!
