Le Pouce Mountain

Third Highest mountain of Mauritius (811mts) and also one of the easiest, Le Pouce Mountain offers a beautiful 360 degree view of Mauritius with, in the foreground, the Pieter Both range western ridge.

Starting off from St. Pierre, the track progresses up the southern flank and then goes straight forward, becoming rougher as it steepens.
There is always a cool breeze blowing on that side of the mountain so that in the hot summer days you will not be too warm. Le Pouce is usually a 1.5 hrs walk with beautiful views over the central part of the island.

The walk is relatively easy for a mountain, with several view breaks before reaching the Esplanade where we will have a small break and decide if we will summit or not. We usually leave our bags at l’esplanade before walking up to the summit.

Although the hike to the ‘nail of the thumb’ is on a small trail that becomes steep, it remains safe before reaching the ultimate summit. This will take us another half hour.

The reward in reaching the thumb is the panoramic view over Port Louis, capital, its harbour and the encircling hills.
