2nd Highest Mountain of the island (820mts) and also one of the most technical. The oddity of the massive rock perched on the very tip of this slender peak fascinates almost every visitor to Mauritius and make the ascent of the mountain seem impossible. However once you will be equipped with helmets, harnesses and ropes, it will look far easier than it looks.

Trip summary

We start at 0700 hrs at la Laura village at the foot of the peak. You have rightly guessed! This is not something for the weak hearted…

You will be given a small briefing on lightning hazards and emergency response.

We will start at 0730 and hike up a small steep trail that will take us directly to a vertical dihedral where we will hike up to the shoulder, passing by some old growth endemic trees and exposed rocks to reach the gulley. An instructor will scramble up and place a safety rope for the group. Part of the gulley is climbed roped up to reach the shoulder.

From there, the view is breathtaking. Far below you will see the Crève Coeur Valley and La Laura village from which we would have started our hike.

The last part of the climb to reach the neck is half scrambling and half rock climbing. There used to be iron rungs set into the rock by the Special force and Royal Navy to help climbers to the top. Time has had it spell and we now scramble our way up safely with ropes, which is more fun!

You will come across ridges with 500m drops on either sides, roped up for safety to reach ‘the balcony ‘beneath the great boulder perched on the very top.

Summiting from the shoulder can be done only if there are no passing clouds.

The ascent of the boulder needs some gymnastics flexibility, so the rope system put in by the instructors will give you additional confidence to reach the summit.

We will hike down though the same route, in approximately 3 hours.
